I wanted to say congratulations to Sonia Sanchez (pictured above with our Athletic Director Rusty Rogers), a senior in my AP European History course; she recently signed to play Division I college soccer at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. She is a great student, excellent person, and a wonderful person. According to the atheletic department:
Sonia had an impressive January on the soccer field that helped the Mustangs secure its second consecutive TAPPS 5A State Playoff berth. Sanchez, who was forced to change positions from defense to forward due to team injuries, led the team with 12 goals and seven assists in the ten-game District 3-5A schedule. For her outstanding effort, the District coaches voted her first all-district forward after gaining similar status after last season as a defender. Sonia’s soccer talent has been noticed nationally as well, as she has signed a letter of intent to continue her soccer career at Appalachian State in North Carolina. Congratulations, Sonia, and good luck at the NCAA Division I level!
Here at HCHS, we have had a number of students go on to both college and the pros due to their athletic proclivity. We value our school as being complete with regards to the spiritual, athletic, academic, and the arts. Last year roughly 45% of our graduating class left the state of Texas to attend college; I find this to be a good thing. Moreover, it serves as a hallmark that we are not a pipeline to a few schools in the state of Texas. I think our campus clearly illustrates HCHS diversity towards the many talents here.
